How does PROPHON distribute remuneration?

In this section we will briefly explain the main processes in the distribution we do:

Step 1: Registration of repertoire; in this way the repertoire is stored in the PROPHON database. The Distribution Department is responsible for the registration of the music repertoire by performing artists and producers and its storage in the database. It is the right and obligation of each rightholder to update his/her repertoire in myProphon or with the assistance from the team of PROPHON. This is extremely important for maximum accuracy of recognition of used recordings.

Step 2: Obtaining and processing of reports from users. The media with which PROPHON has signed contracts provide reports for the music recordings aired on their shows. These statements contain details such as title, names of the performer and the producer of the audio or video recording used, as well as of the track duration and number of plays.

Step 3: Recognition process. The recognition process connects used tracks listed in the received reports and the registered music repertoire in the PROPHON database.

Step 4: Distribution of proceeds from users. Proceeds from users for a given period are distributed according to the following principles:

• Proceeds from radio and TV shows – allocation is based on the report from the relevant media;
• Proceeds from retransmission (cable and telecommunication operators) – allocation is based on average airplay*;
• Proceeds from use of music in public places (restaurants, hotels, retail centres, etc.) – allocation is as follows – 50% based on average airplay and 50% based on monitoring reports of broadcasting of music repertoire in the shows of Bulgarian National Television and Bulgarian National Radio.

Step 5: Distribution of remuneration among rightholders
At PROPHON remuneration is distributed in the most advanced and fair way possible, corresponding to a maximum extent to the actual use, based on the per-track/per-second principle.

* Average airplay – the relative share of the duration of a track out of the aggregate duration from all statements submitted by users, in accordance with actual use.
