Nearly 100,000 people in this country are legal users of subscription-based music services, said the Chairperson of the Managing Board of PROPHON and the Bulgarian Association of Music Producers (BAMP) Stanislava Armoutlieva in connection with the fact that streaming platforms (YouTube, Spotify, AppleMusic) get increasingly popular in our country. This would be predominantly young people who are the target of the BAMP campaign ‘Intellectual Property Lesson’ that is to be launched in February next year.
The focus of the initiative are the students of arts schools under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture. Some of the most popular Bulgarian performers, producers, composers, lyricists and legal experts will be championing the idea of the value of creative products.
Stanislava Armoutlieva explained what prompted the BAMP initiative: ‘All those of us who for years have been investing their soul, talent, time, and efforts in music-making have realised that one of the largest problems we face is the pervasive lack of appreciation for the intangible, particularly the products of intellectual work. The manifestations of this disrespect are at many levels and prevent talented people in this country from developing and doing creative works for a living’.
Stanislava Armoutlieva also shared that over the years the efforts of the organisation had focused on legislative amendments related to intellectual property, until the realisation that the most important step to reverse the situation was to change people’s attitudes. ‘My colleagues from the music industry and myself truly believe that the hope for a better future is in education. We would run into huge ignorance of copyright on a daily basis, and this prompted us to create a short story about the birth of music and its path to people’.
